Meaning behind the #555Campaign

Do you know how to pronounce the number five in Thai? It’s “ha” with the tone going up and down. So when you say 555- literally “HAHAHA”- it takes a deep exhale- you cannot help but grin! Thailand is already known as the Land of Smiles and we want to use this thought to raise awareness and funding for the ladyboys and young guys again. Yes, the ones that leave prostitution have often gone through deep pain, abuse, family heartaches and more. Their stories often shock us and bring us to tears, yet we keep walking alongside these precious guys and individuals. We want to see them not just smile again, but LAUGH deeply over the hope that springs up, the healing that is happening and the holistic, bright future they are walking towards. Will you join us?

Since five in Thai starts with an “h” sound, we chose three words as an acronym:

Hope . Healing . Whole .

and we ask that you choose a gift that has 5 in it. Whether you can give $15 a month, $25 or more, every gift directly provides an opportunity for a ladyboy or young guy to experience at least one of those three words.

A few examples:

$15 covers two separate outreaches in the red light districts where the staff and volunteers can meet with the male and transgendered sex workers.

$15 covers the cost of a doctor appointment
1 in 3 of our students have HIV or another serious sexually transmitted illness. This significantly helps them have the care, education and meds they need to start living healthier lives.

$15 can open a door for one individual to finish education
It’s actually less than $15 to start finishing their high-school diploma through a GED type weekend course. Most Thai businesses require at least an equivalent of a ninth grade level of education to apply for a job. A high percentage of the young guys and transgendered working in the bars haven’t even finished ninth grade, immediately restricting their ability to find legitimate work.

Want to join our campaign? Whatever you are able to give honestly makes a significant impact. Let’s see their smiles break out together!
