Human Trafficking, Exploitation, and Abuse

Dton Naam will not tolerate any type of abuse towards students, bar workers, staff members, or other volunteers.

The UN definition of human trafficking is: "The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation".

  • Sexual exploitation is the abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust for sexual purposes; this includes profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the exploitation of another.

    • All physical contact, which can be interpreted as sexual with a child below the age of 18, with or without consent, is punishable by law under the Child Protection Act of Thailand. We also view unwanted sexual advances and encounters to be sexual abuse to those over 18 years of age too.

  • Emotional abuse includes the failure to provide a developmentally appropriate and supportive environment.  There may also be acts toward the individual that cause, or have a high probability of causing, harm to health or development.

  • Physical abuse is the causing of physical harm or failure to prevent physical harm to a child, teen or adult.

  • Spiritual abuse is the misuse of power, authority and/or trust by a spiritual leader, or someone in a position of spiritual power or authority, with the intention of controlling, coercing, manipulating, or dominating a person.

  • Neglect is the persistent or severe abandonment of a person or the failure to protect a child/teen/adult from exposure to any kind of danger; or extreme failure to carry out important aspects of care, resulting in the significant impairment of the person’s health or development.
