Desperation

Desperation

This will not be an easy thing to explain or read, but my friend Kay, a Thai Founder for another non-profit in the city wrote,

“please pray for The THAI people at this time of Covid 19. The suicide rate has gone up over 4 times more than normal because the poor do not have job, food and money to live on during the lockdown. My heart is crying and I am asking you to pause to pray for everybody affected by Covid 19, physically, emotionally, or financially. This is an urgent prayer request from Thailand.”

There’s been apparently lots of glitches in the computer & gov’t systems… where aid and finances are not always reaching the ones that are needing it most at this time. Thais were hoping to receive about a 5,000 baht ($160 US) at the end of March/early April from the gov’t to help during this time of shutting down stores/jobs/tourism, etc… but few have received it. People are desperate in villages, unable to travel to buy things they need or have money to buy basic food and supplies. Because many Thais have some form of life insurance, they are resorting to suicide to at least provide some type of immediate funds to keep the other family members alive. Even though life insurance packages doesn’t usually allow for that, they are risking it nonetheless…

Our student “Bella” told us about two suicides last week that happened in her hometown village. There were pictures, ripple of shock through the community, people she knows…

Another non-profit friend said there’s now more suicide related deaths than Covid-related deaths in Thailand…

Please pray!
